The dark shadow of the 2013 salary cap has hung over Florham Park during the free agency period, leaving the Jets lacking any financial clout to compete with others as those few individuals hat shone during the gloom of 2012 head to pastures new.
Changes as we all known were inevitable following the disappointment of last season and the appointment of new GM John Idzik. The Jets aim to head in a new direction incorporating a mixture of youth and talented individuals that have flown under the radar elsewhere within the NFL.
Whilst the change and removal of the dead wood will freshen up the roster, there is one thing that does concern me. How will Rex Ryan replace the strong locker room characters and natural leaders that have left the club. Mike Devito, Brandon Moore, Matt Slauson are the kind of player you want within your locker room, and of course Bart Scott had his own unique way of influencing a locker room.
Many feel that this could be Ryan's last season in charge but without the combination of his guys and the locker room glue Rex finds himself facing a captain conundrum. A year after deciding (yes Holmes you ruined it for everyone) against having the C patch on individuals uniforms, Rex now requires those qualities more than ever from his players. Will Rex have a change of heart?
Beyond the obvious choice of Nick Mangold and Darrelle Revis (should he remain a Jet) I'm struggling to decide who'd fit the role of a captain. Cromartie certainly stepped up on the field last season and can talk the talk but can he walk the walk, do his random outbursts dent his chances? Mo Wilkerson is another possible candidate, his impressive play over the last two years and his attitude on and off the field are exemplary. The Jets do have a natural leader within the ranks in the form of Demario Davis, but his limited play during his rookie season would he be able to command the respect of the more senior players on the roster?
The question remains should Rex bring back the C patch and if so who should wear it? thoughts on this please.
