Every fan that bleeds the green and white of the New York Jets can agree that one position that has plagued the Jets in past seasons is the quarterback position. With that being a known fact, well break down the New York Jets quarterback situation. Currently on the roster the Jets have Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Tim Tebow, Matt Simms, and Greg McElroy. Will this be the unit that entertains the season next year? The answer is most likely not. The incumbent quarterback Mark Sanchez has a lot of work to do to retain his starting job. Yes, Rex Ryan has said Sanchez will start the offseason program as the starter, but the fact of the matter is Sanchez has not been productive. Sanchez will have to improve his play in which going to be a huge quarterback position battle. Last year, Sanchez’s main threats to take his job were Tim Tebow and Greg McElroy, which really is not that hard of competition. However, Sanchez will definitely have harder competition to go against in this year’s training camp.
Let’s begin with who is believed to be the biggest challenges to Sanchez’s starting position. The first quarterback well begin with is Greg McElroy. McElroy seems as if he is just a winner. He won the BCS National Championship at Alabama and showed the winning touch in engineering a win for the Jets against the Arizona Cardinals last year. McElroy is young and showed great poise in leading the Jets to that 7-6 victory over the Arizona Cardinals last year. McElroy showed promise in that performance against the Cardinals, but was it just a one game wonder? McElroy will be out to prove all the non believers that he could be the next Jets starting quarterback comes training camp.
Recently, the Jets acquired David Garrard through free agency. Garrard has had many injuries that has plagued him throughout his career, but could be a major contender in the Jets quarterback sweepstakes. A lot of people look at Garrard as old and do not take him to be a serious contender. What people forget is Garrard was a pro bowler back in 2009 and has proved to be a very efficient quarterback in the NFL. In Garrard’s NFL career, he has recorded 89 touchdown passes and 54 interceptions. Garrard is sure to push Sanchez to a new limit and possibly even win over the starting job.
The two other quarterbacks on the roster are Tim Tebow and Matt Simms. The Tebow drama surrounded the team last year as he created a ton of media coverage with his presence. Tebow was not utilized much last year and did very little to assist the Jets efforts. Most likely, Tebow will be cut by the team before training camp to clear way for another possible quarterback signing. Matt Simms is signed as a developmental player and has very little NFL experience. If he isn’t cut, it is most likely that he will not be involved in this quarterback controversy.
With this being said, it is most likely the Jets will add another quarterback to the competition. Some names that could become available to the Jets include Carson Palmer, Kevin Kolb, Seneca Wallace, and Brady Quinn. Carson Palmer was a guy who became linked to the Jets immediately after the Raiders acquired Matt Flynn this week. The stir that caused this was the fact that Palmer could be cut by the Raiders in the forth coming weeks. Also, I would not be surprised if the Jets added a quarterback in the NFL draft such as Tyler Wilson, Ryan Nassib, or EJ Manuel. Nevertheless, the Jets quarterback competition will be one of the most intriguing topics of this year’s training camp and is sure to gain a ton of media coverage.
