The New York Jets have traded struggling right tackle Wayne Hunter to the St Louis Rams in exchange for Jason Smith (right tackle). Hunters endured a torrid 12 months, giving up 11 sacks last season, with no visible signs of improvement during the this years pre-season games. Hunters misery was complete when the Jets benched him in favour of Austin Howard prior to the game against the Panthers.
Jason Smith is a former #2 overall pick (2009), who made 26 of 29 starts during his three year spell with the Rams. Concussions and injuries have been a concern for Smith who lost out on the starting job to Barry Richardson this pre-season. Austin Howard is expected to remain as the starter, with Smith becoming an even more expensive backup ($4m) then Hunter ($2.5m).
The Jets have waived tight end/full back Josh Baker who sustained an knee injury in Sundays defeat to the Panthers. Scans have revealed that Baker has a torn ACL, Baker is expected to go the Jets IR should no one claim him off the waivers.
