Hunter Traded, Baker Waived

Howard Smith Us PresswireThe New York Jets have traded struggling right tackle Wayne Hunter to the St Louis Rams in exchange for Jason Smith (right tackle). Hunters endured a torrid 12 months, giving up 11 sacks last season, with no visible signs of improvement during the this years pre-season games. Hunters misery was complete when the Jets benched him in favour of Austin Howard prior to the game against the Panthers.

Jason Smith is a former #2 overall pick (2009), who made 26 of 29 starts during his three year spell with the Rams. Concussions and injuries have been a concern for Smith who lost out on the starting job to Barry Richardson this pre-season. Austin Howard is expected to remain as the starter, with Smith becoming an even more expensive backup ($4m) then Hunter ($2.5m).

The Jets have waived tight end/full back Josh Baker who sustained an knee injury in Sundays defeat to the Panthers. Scans have revealed that Baker has a torn ACL, Baker is expected to go the Jets IR should no one claim him off the waivers.
