Featured Fan of the Week #7: Jake Steinberg from Manhattan, New York
/Anyone who follows the Jets on Twitter has heard of Jake Steinberg and if they haven’t then they are missing out on some of the best insight out there period. Jake is a guy that seems to get along with everyone and him makes it easy for players and fans to flock to him. He delivers news about the team as it happens and in many instances he is the first to post it. Based on all the hard work he puts in he is recognized by numerous Jets players and has strong relationships with them as well. On top of being a great person in the social media field, he is also very generous to his fans. He has many contests where he simply gives away amazing prizes. He is sending numerous people to Canton, Ohio this year to see Curtis Martin get inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. He gives away merchandise and also helps other people as much as he can. The winner of the Santonio Holmes charity auction found out about it through Steinberg’s Twitter account. Jake always has time for his fans and is never too busy to answer questions. He is a people person and very approachable which is why he is so popular and regarded so highly by the people who talk to him.
Jake has a story that when you read it you know exactly why his love for the Jets is so strong. This team is not only a thing to watch and follow but also a building block in the relationships he has formed especially with his father. “My dad introduced me to the Jets when I was a very young boy. I saw football as a way to connect with him. We both shared a love for it, so it brought our relationship closer. I love my dad with all my heart and thank him every day for introducing me to this team.”
There are so many people on Twitter who want to get their name out there based on their knowledge for their respected teams. There is a time where simply being a fan is not enough and you know you were meant to do something more. This mindset is how Jake started his social media and writing journey. “After a while I realized I needed to do more than just watch the games. I wanted to be a part of it. I became an avid reader of TJB. One day I saw Bassett made a post regarding the upcoming 2010 draft. He asked fans to send in any pieces of information they had regarding the players visiting the team, working out for the team... leading up to the draft. I took this task head on, and for the next few months dedicated myself to finding out who the Jets were meeting with. I came up with 300 or so players…poor Bassett I send them all to his email! At the end of the day he was really impressed with my effort and drive. He offered me a job to work at SNY and the rest is history.”
The Jets have a special place in the hearts of all fans who dedicate their time to watch and follow them. There are different levels of fans ranging from casual to diehard. It is safe to say that Jake Steinberg may need a category to himself because diehard just doesn’t cut it. “The Jets have had a huge impact on my life. I spend hours upon hours each and every day talking Jets football, whether it be with fans, media, agents, players, it doesn't matter. My main goal is to bring a new aspect to Jets reporting. No beat writers are Jets fans. They are just people looking for headlines. I understand what the fans want and what the fans need---a majority of the fans don't have any interest in hearing about Tebow 24/7, so I try to bring a unique and interesting perspective into what and how I break my news and report stuff!”
Most fans can name a favorite player on the team without even thinking. Jake is so good at what he does that he has formed relationships with players on a personal level. The players know that the go to guy who will promote them no matter if you are a first round draft pick or an undrafted free agent is Jake Steinberg. “It's very hard for me to name a favorite player, because I have become so close with a ton of guys. A few guys in particular though really stand out. DaMarcus Ganaway. I've had the opportunity to get to know DaMarcus very well. We started talking around the time the Jets worked him out last season (the bye week during October) and have been in constant contact ever since. He's an amazing guy who just wants to provide for his family and be a great NFL player. There's really nothing more you can ask for in a guy. His girlfriend, Mary, is also an amazing person. DaMarcus is one of the hardest workers I've ever come across, and I tell anybody who will listen that he's going to be something special. The other three guys are Royce Adams, John Griffin and Marcus Dixon. Adams is a guy who is just a great human being. He truly cares about the well-being of others, and put everybody before himself. On the field, he's an animal. He's been getting work in Rex's defense, something unheard of for an UDFA. It just shows you what the coaching staff thinks of Royce. Griff is a great dude. All offseason he was the got up early to workout and didn't stop until late at night. He's very humble and appreciates every moment he has. Griff has been turning heads during his time as a Jet, and this is just the beginning of his success. Lastly, Dixon is a guy who is just really solid. He doesn't all his accomplishments get to his head. I've never seen somebody so eager and willing to give back to the community. Just a great guy.”
Jake's favorite game is one that we have never seen thus far. The reason why it is different is because it is yet to come. “My favorite game had to be the San Diego AFC Divisional Game. Everybody was so hyped up and we all really thought that was our year. However, my favorite game hasn't arrived yet, as it is going to be when the Jets win the Super Bowl in 2013!” You can’t say it any better than that. The Super Bowl is the ultimate goal and Jake truly believes this is the Jets year. Don't worry Jet fans the wait won't be much longer!
For all of us at the NYJOTP team we appreciate Jake sharing his story with us. It is our pleasure to present a media figure and diehard fan who cares so much about the team and all of their fans. His love for the team started at a young age and has only gotten stronger year after year. There is no doubt in my mind that Jake Steinberg will be a name that will blow up one day. He is a great guy and the world will see it very soon. As always I wish that this website not only brings you Jets knowledge but friendships as well.
